I wasn't even able to get the site for a lot of yesterday afternoon/evening and again this afternoon :-( but it was apparently an NTL proxy problem and nothing to do with this site. I could access some sites and not others, including this one.

*touch wood* but the forum hasn't been slow for me in the slightest. I was only online for about half an hour yesterday but I've been on a couple of times today and it's been fine.

ditto gum boy.

It seems to be OK when it wants to be and at other times really slow and not loading.

Is it because of all the forums and the posts this forum has?

The database is pretty large and takes up most the of the hosting space we have available. The heavy traffic and size of the tables does mean that it can be slow and tables can become corrupted more often than normal. The lack of space available also causes problems when trying to repair corrupted tables.

I have for the moment removed the ability to search back through old posts. The two tables powering the search were nearly 100MB in size and contained 4315584 rows of data. This will give us the space needed to perform maintenance tasks on the database in future. It should also speed posting up a little.

Apologies to those who liked the search, but the hosting budget (which is helped by the adverts above and kind donations) doesn't stretch to anything greater. It may be back one day, as it's not too hard to regenerate the index.

Yes, this site does take up a huge amount of resources and so hosting isn't cheap. Hopefully, things will be a bit improved now that we have more space to play with.

It had got to a point where I couldn't repair corrupted tables any more and had to keep asking the hosting company to do it for me, which all took time. Now, I should have the space to be able to repair them myself, so if the site does play up, it should get fixed more quickly.

If you get any errors, please just send an email to christine@bbfans.com or bob@bbfans.com and then hopefully, one of us will be around to fix the problem. Thank you.
