This is a modified form of the Victorian 'Cut.' The Cut was a device used to deliver an insult without saying a word. As the victims approached you let them see they had been noticed. Then, at the last moment, you turned your head away and walked past them without speaking. This was done towards anyone trying to infiltrate a social group of higher status.
Inside the Big Brother House, the original housemates consider themselves to have a higher status than any latecomer, so they cleverly employed a disguised cut........''
