Yes, we laugh at how camp Derek is, & so on & so on.

But he shouldn't have said "people like Science make me want to consider joining the BNP." - not verbatim - his correct quote would be appreciated.

The BNP have included people who've denied the holocaust in the past.

Shame on you Derek, but we don't take you seriously.

Another Tory we can all ridicule.

I certainly think that Derek made his point clear. And his analogy on The BNP is very true. I watched the programme about BNP party (and the racist remarks its HIGH PROFILE LEADERS made). BNP is nothing, but a disgrace - not only for our nation, but the entire world. There might be some people in BNP who don't have such a radical political view. But main thing is: what the top leaders do. That's what really counts.

Shame on Derek then - because being gay & of West Indian heritage would make him a target for BNP hatred.

Science may be a annoying prat to some but his ethnic origin has nothing to do with it, even if he thinks it himself.

'Speak as you find' is the best way to destroy racism & the BNP.

Derek made that comment tongue in cheek, ok some may have seen it as bad taste, but he meant it in HUMOUR

I found it funny, so does that make me racist? get a grip, gawd pc brigade really need to get a sense of humour at times

I said before I thought it was flippant, but to take Derek seriously is even more bizarre.
However, Derek has to watch what he says.
If the leader of the Tory party said what he said, even if tongue-in-cheek, they would be absolutely slaughtered.

Derek didn't suggest anything like that. What Derek implied was: being a black person himself, he couldn't stand Science's annoying behaviour that he felt like wanting to join BNP. This is not a racism because the context is clear. It's not about Science's ethnicity: but it's about both of them (Derek & Science) being black.

The rule about racism: you can talk about your own ethnicity in a cynical way (and this is not sensitive!); but you should never talk about other's ethnicity. Why? Becuase you're not belong to the group. Any remark of such nature could be potentially interpreted/misinterpreted as trying to degrade that particular person based on ethnicity or cultural background. But if it happens within individuals (in the same cultural group): then, it's percieved as individual clash; not a race clash.

That's the reason why all the colored housemates in BB6 had never made any reference to white-oriented national, race, culture, language or religion. But Craig and Maxwell did make a specific reference to that (implying on other ethnicity other than their own).

Why would Derek want to join the crude BNP??

Not quite sure Michael Howard said anything like this, even in jest.

He didn't. Derek was merely making a "rhetorical question/statement" (a statement that no chav is able to make or understand).

What is rhetorical question/statement?

A question intended to provoke thought, but not an expressed answer, in the reader. It is most commonly used in oratory and other persuasive genres. The following lines from Thomas Gray's "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" ask rhetorical questions: Can storied urn or animated bust Back to its mansion call the fleeting breath? Can Honour's voice provoke the silent dust, Or Flattery soothe the dull cold ear of Death?

Political careers are destroyed by moronic comments - no matter if they're 'rhetorical questions/statements'.

Derek also said the 'north' is backward.
He obviously doesn't shop on the Kings Road.

Rhetorical questions/statements are not (and will never be!) a moronic comment. 99% of UK population know that. I've never known in my entire life of any politicians have his/her career ruined because of rhetorical statements.

Still haven't heard Michael Howard say 'he can understand why' certain people feel obliged to join a disgusting racist political party like the BNP.

There's no need for any reponse on rhetorical statement; simply because it's merely a rhetoric! The statement itself clear out the issue. And, Derek's statement was strong enough to carry that purpose that his statement had never been an issue. Nobody has ever made a big deal out of it - politically. :D

It's not meant to be funny; and nobody, in his sane mind, should find it funny. Niether it's offensive in any way. It's just a plain rhetorical statement. :D

Yes, it could be offensive for some people. But my point is: it's GENERALLY not offensive. So far, the media (the better indicator of neutral observation compared to internet forum discussion) never does make it any deal, let alone a BIG DEAL.
