Sorry for raising this in a new thread but I can't find the original.
In that thread I was asked to state the where Derek had said racist comments. With the conversation happening now on E4 I've remembered one of them.
The infamous phrase was that someone, probably Makosi or Science, I truely can't remember who, was so bad "It's enough to make you want to vote for the BNP"
Now I ask you to be totally honest here...what would have happened if Max or Saskia had uttered those words...
Why is that a racist remark? Derek didn't imply that one culture/race/skin is actually more superior than other, did he? No, he didn't.
The exact quote was: "Science is the first black person that really makes me feel like wanting to join the BNP!"
It's clearly a rhetorical statement. What Derek tried to imply was that: racism against colored/black people is sometimes actually caused (or encouraged) by the behaviour of the colored/black people themselves (in this case, he was refering to Science extreme ghetto behaviour). Derek has a point there. Nothing is wrong about this, considering the fact that Derek himself is a black person. If Derek was a white, such comment is certainly distasteful because it would imply the superiority of white race.
Now consider what Craig had said: "Makosi will last LONGER at Zimbabwe BB". What Craig was suggesting?
That Makosi is more accepted in Zimbabwe because she is a Zimbabwean.
That Makosi is less accepted in UK because she is not a British.
And the fact that Craig himself is a British and not a Zimbabwean had increased the distasteful flavour in his comment. He implicitly implied the superiority of one nationality (in this case, his) over another (in this case, Makosi's).
Maxwell and Saskia laughed at this statement and noddingly approved it. No surprise because Saskia herself did say in her BB audition that "all immigrants should be sent back to their countries". This is not necessarily a racist comment; but it clearly shows her preference in life. Maxwell also did once, unapologetically, mock Roberto Italian accent as if his Cockney accent is MUCH SUPERIOR than Roberto's.
I don't understand why people can mock and make fun of other races, nationalities, cultures and languages? We can do it within our own group of ethnicity, but not against other groups!
