How do other people see Big Brother? You see people all the time saying 'its only a gameshow' in order to make light of actions etc...and I am aware it is a gameshow, but moreso to me I think it's about watching 14 people live in a house together...the gameshow aspect is secondary (if you want that then just watch Survivor or American BB, both are far superior in that sense). Now if Makosi had been in American BB where the show is 95% 'the game' and 5% about the persons character I really would have thought she was brilliant and deserved to win...i'm rambling now...the thing is that the way I see it is if it is going to be a PROPER gameshow then they need to change the rules...everything about it as it is now is set up to not allow for game playing (no nomination discussions) then I don't have a problem with it being a gameshow, but as it is now....to me...it ISNT a gameshow.

So, is it a Gameshow for you or not?

(yay my least concise post ever...I just can't seem to get the right words out lol)

I would say yes, although it's pretty much impossible for anyone to play it as such and hope to win. However, I doubt anyone has ever had abuse shouted at them in the streets for getting a question wrong on Catchphrase, so as gameshows go, it's rather unconventional.
As BB gameplayers go, I think Victor did it best to an extent, by going to the diary room and telling us what he was doing and thinking in terms of playing the game. that seemed to work quite well, at least until he started being a complete prat after his gameplans were messed up once too often.

You both make great points.

I tend to see it more as social interaction. And I think that's how most of the audiences sees it. That could be a reflection on our society. While we love puzzles and quizzes as a nation, I think we take a greater interest in human relationships (hence our great tradition in literature and at the other cultural pole - soap operas).

But I think the HMs see BB as a game, and they are always conscious of the prize money and any future personal rewards they hope will come to them. They are playing to us and each other, but you can't help but be yourself. Games are hard/impossible to play 24/7.

Difficult question to answer. I liked the game players in there, but I also liked those who revealed their true selves.

I think Makosi did both, I think her real self IS a game player. So too is Derek, and to a much lesser extent Science and Kemal.

All four struck me as artificial. And I think, paradoxically, that IS actually their true selves. They struck me as false people constantly needing to create and re-create themselves and to present an image to the world. And I think they were like that long before they entered BB and have shown themselves to be like that post-BB.

Maxwell and Ant may also be like this, but they seemed to have more naturalness, and to be just game-players for their duration in BB only.

I have a rather odd way of looking at BB which I doubt many others involve themselves so seriously... oh yeah, I'm a complete geek about it.

I'll come back to explain when I have time.

Good topic though :D

It stopped being a gameshow when Jade and Kate became such celebrities - something continued very evidently last year with Shell, Vanessa and Nadia - It is now seen as a launch=pad for a media career. This - I think - is what has spoiled the programe.

Is it anymore social interaction or gameshow if the producers makes people behave or force them to do certain things that they wouldn't like to do in the House at all but they'll have to do if they want to get in the House? :-?
