There has been criticism of a decision to appoint Big Brother winner Anthony Hutton as an ambassador for young people in his home town.
The 23-year-old, from Consett, was named winner of the sixth series of the reality TV show on Friday night.

Labour-controlled Derwentside District Council organised a civic welcome for the dancer on Tuesday afternoon, during which he was mobbed by teenage girls.

But opposition councillors criticised the decision to hold the celebration.

Derwentside said it wanted to organise a special welcome home for Mr Hutton, which took place at the Blackhill and Consett Park.
The council also said it planned to appoint him as its official "ambassador for young people".

Council leader Councillor Alex Watson said: "Anthony has certainly put Consett on the map.

"We are pleased to be able to recognise Anthony's achievement by bestowing upon him the honour as ambassador for young people. We hope that he will help us motivate other young people in the district to achieve personal success."

But John Ingham, of opposition group Derwentside Independents, condemned the move as a "waste of taxpayers' money".

'Least obnoxious'

He said: "The first I knew of this was when I got a phone call on Monday inviting me to a party to celebrate this lad's homecoming.

"Good luck to the lad, but I am opposed to this. All he has done is win a popularity contest, the criteria for which appears to be the least obnoxious of all the entrants.

"I wish him all the best and understand he has won a lot of money. But I don't think this justifies spending council tax payers' money."

Mr Ingham, who admitted to not watching Big Brother, added: "There is a long list of projects that the council could use this money for, from the regeneration of Stanley town centre to providing decent playing facilities for kids."

Mr Ingham, who will not be attending Tuesday's event, said he planned to raise the "use or misuse of council money" with fellow councillors.

But Mr Watson said the only outlay was for a public address system.

He added: "There's no food and no transport for anyone. It's not costing the taxpayers anything."

I don't get why they have made him "ambassador" for young people?? He has come home after winning big brother, it should just be left at that. To me, this is just an attempt by the council to make themselves look good. There is loads of stuff that the council could be doing to improve the area, and yet they go and do this in a pathetic attempt to improve their "image". Not taking anything away from Anthony, total respect to him for winning big brother, and good luck to whatever he decides to do in the future :D

So...Labour is pro Anthony..and the 'others' are anti-Anthony as 'ambassador'.

Can the sleazy deceitful dumb narrow minded political wannabes keep their slimy noses out of anything? Not even our dear BB is free from their threats. Yes, you can be sure that 'some' would want the show banned were they in power.

Little does Anthony realise, that they are probably using him in their little game of their own. They'll use anything they have at their disposal to gain the upper hand. I bet the cadidate was all too keen to have his photo taken with Anthony, smiles all around eh

What a role model he is. The competition with Maxwell to see who can wet himself first, pissing out of the loft window, the aggression, the fumbling with makosi in the jacuzzi as well as all the other random snogging of any female in sight, the limited vocabulary littered with swearing.

Fabulous.

That sun article does make him look a bit stupid to say the least. Getting so drunk you can even get up, hmmn right, okay. I bet the councilors feel right prats now. Although, he's a good looking lad, so this would have guaranteed the womens votes, and the labour councilor got in there first, so it will be good for his image

Big Brother victor Anthony Hutton was mobbed by teenage girls today as he returned to his home town for the first time since winning the reality TV show.

The 23-year-old 70s disco dancer was given a hero`s welcome as he attended a special reception laid on by his local council in Consett, Co Durham, to celebrate Friday night`s triumph.

But Derwentside District Council`s decision to also make him an "Ambassador for Young People" has been criticised by some councillors, who accused it of wasting taxpayers` money.

Council leader Alex Watson said: "Anthony has certainly put Consett on the map.

"We are pleased to be able to recognise Anthony`s achievement by bestowing upon him the honour as `Ambassador for Young People`.

"We have all read in the press how Anthony has helped put Consett on the map and I am sure that in the future as an ambassador with family connections in the district he will continue to do so.

"We hope that he will help us motivate other you
ng people in the district to achieve personal success."

Anthony, who lives with his mother, Annette, and grandmother, Mary, in the former steel town became an overnight celebrity after winning the sixth series of the popular reality show.

Following the closest final yet, the dancer beat nerdy Eugene Sully, although they shared the £100,000 jackpot.

Anthony was once signed to Whickham FC for £75, however, his current team mates at County Durham club Annfield Plain, say he`s too fat to play after piling on the pounds while sitting around talking to his pal Craig.
