Hundreds of fans turned out to welcome Big Brother winner Anthony Hutton's triumphant homecoming last night.
The Victorian bandstand in Blackhill and Consett park cannot have witnessed scenes like it, as Anthony, 23, danced to booming disco music, dressed in a Big Brother t-shirt and woollen hat, to the screams of youngsters. He expressed amazement at the size of his welcome, saying: "It is off the scale. This is nothing like I was expecting.
"It's mad. It's fantastic to see some of my old schoolfriends in the audience. I would like to thank the people of Consett for supporting me."
Personnel officer Helen Harrison, 23, of Delves Lane, Consett, was among the crowds. She said: "I love Big Brother and it was wonderful to see somebody we know win it. Anthony is a lovely lad, there is not an ounce of malice in him."
Her friend, Louise Piggott, 23, who went to St Bede's RC Secondary School in Lanchester with Anthony, said: "He's put Consett on the map."
Derwentside District Council arranged the homecoming, and plans to honour Anthony by appointing him as ambassador for young people. Leader Alex Watson said: "We hope that by appointing him Ambassador for Young People he will help motivate others in the district to achieve personal success."
