BIG Brother's dapper Derek Laud is among the speakers lined up to entertain students at the Cambridge this term.

The Tory political analyst and fox-hunting fan will join the ranks of former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove, top journalist Robert Fisk and MP for Cambridge David Howarth, when he appears at the society this month.

Outspoken Mr Laud, a contestant in this summer's Channel 4 reality TV show, has penned speeches for the likes of Baroness Margaret Thatcher and Michael Heseltine while working in the House of Commons.

The only black member of the Monday Club, which supported repatriation of immigrants and the apartheid regime in South Africa, he counts Neil and Christine Hamilton and Chris Eubank among his friends.

He is due to appear at the Union on October 26.

Students will hear from The Independent's Middle East correspondent, Robert Fisk, on Monday.

A veteran reporter, he has covered wars including the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, the Iranian revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. He criticised other journalists in Iraq for "hotel journalism".

Christopher Woodhead, former Chief Inspector of Schools in England, will be making an appearance on November 9, while Sir Richard Dearlove, who was head of the British Secret Intelligence Service until last year, will speak on November 14.

Archie Norman, the man credited with turning the around the fortunes of supermarket chain Asda, is due to talk on November 22, and students will have the chance to take tea with their local Lib Dem MP David Howarth on November 28.

This Friday, Sir Jeremy Greenstock will be speaking about his experiences as the former British Ambassador to the United Nations in New York.cambridgenews
