MEET CAMERON'S GOLDEN WINNER
The shrieks must have wakened the whole of the neighbourhood.
And no wonder. Sheelagh Tough was in bed when the doorbell rang just after 9am.
Downstairs she padded in her pyjamas, opened the door and ...
There stood Evening Express Romeo Cameron Stout announcing: "You've won the Golden Rose!"
Silence as our mum-of-three let the words sink in.
Then: "Oh my Lord. Oh my Lord. Oooooh my Loooooooooord!"
That's when the rest of Newtonhill knew something was afoot at the terraced house near the sea.
And as three-year-old Ellie stared open-mouthed, her mum broke down in floods of tears, sobbing: "I can't believe it. I can't believe Cameron has chosen me. I can't believe he's standing here."
After a week of handing out red roses to 1,000 lovely ladies across the North-east, our Cameron's choice for the Golden Rose was someone as super-bubbly as the champagne he popped for her.
Handing over the tickets to Paris and £500 spending money, Cameron told his golden girl: "Right from day one, I was looking for someone really effervescent and memorable.
"When I presented a rose to you in Asda at Portlethen that was exactly the reaction I got.
"You were laughing and crying all at the same time. You stood out above the 999 other ladies I met."
Still in her jammies and a state of shock, Sheelagh phoned her in-laws.
Lynda and Stewart, both 56, live close by in Newtonhill and were soon at the door sharing the excitement.
The Golden Rose's husband, 32-year-old Niki, had to wait to learn he was married to a girl-in-1,000.
An engineer with Haliburton, he was working in the Oman desert and not contactable by phone. Sheelagh said: "When he phones me, I'll wait for all his news, then say: Guess what's just happened to ME?"
The couple were married three years ago in New York's Central Park.
Also missing the excitement was our winner's two other children - both pupils at Portlethen Academy.
Calum, 12, was playing football and 15-year-old Kayleigh was on a sleep-over.
A former pupil of Mackie and Portlethen academies, Sheelagh moved to the North-east from Stornoway when she was 10.
She was a classroom assistant at Netherley Primary until two years ago when her mum, Sandra Macmillan died at 54 from cancer.
Now Sheelagh does all the cleaning and shopping for her 59-year-old dad, Iain, a planning engineer from Portlethen.
In fact, she was doing her weekly shop for him on Thursday when she had her lucky meeting with Cameron.
Sheelagh said: "I was a huge fan of his in Big Brother. When he suddenly appeared in front of me I went to jelly.
"Now I'm stunned he's chosen me for the Golden Rose. It's all like the most wonderful dream.
"Please don't let me wake up."
