I hope that is suposed to be funny - as someone who has a family member with this syndrome I would take great exception to such an ifnorant comment if it were not meant as a joke. :8o:

Don't think Dixy meant it seriously at all - he isn't that kind of person.

I agree with Jezi. Dixy can answer for himself, but from all the contact I've had with him previously, I'd say a HUGE amount of irony has been used there.

Did anyone see the new Ricky Gervais *Extras* show this week?

In that case I will forgive the ignorance - I guess the irony was lost on me. As you can imagine it is a rather touchy subject for my family.

Tell me about it.

I've got a brother with a port wine birthmark on his face, and there are many times when I want to thump people for their reaction. Not that I'm remotely violent, of course...

I have experience of teaching small children who have been diagnosed as having autistic spectrum problems of one sort of another, and my friend's two nephews are severely autistic. So it's not a subject I would like people to be flippant about either.

My nephew has Aspergers syndrome and he has some problems relating to people he does not know - which is why I have great admiration for Eugene if this is true, and also why I questioned the ethics of BB producers agreeing to his being in the house.

My nephew is a very caring person , and great company, unfortunately he is also very obsessive which can be a problem. However he is not a freak and on some levels functions better than so-called 'normal' people of the same age.

so yes haveing spent a lot of time looking after him for my brother I also do not find it a subject to be flippant about.

On a more serious note - having watched Eugene over the last few weeks - there is a similarity between their behavoiur and mannerisms.

I don't think people should be talking about the title of the thread in, and implying that Eugene suffers from this, I think it's unkind, just because he is slightly different to some people. There's nothing wrong with his character. If he actually says this himself, then fair enough.

I don't really know anything about Asperger's Syndrome but I'm pretty sure it can be on lots of levels so maybe Eugene does have it mildly.

Nobody was saying there was anything wrong with his character in the first place Chad.

Is it any worse than discussing people's other facets, such as sexuality, personality etc? Just wondering.

...and there has been speculation elsewhere about other HM's and other 'syndromes'.

Cameron, in my opinion, it's not. It's not like it's something to 'hide', the person is a person. What on earth is 'normal' anyway?

why the hell can't we talk about it? People talk about all sorts of things its merely an observation of his character and he doesn't SUFFER. He possibly has it but its part of his character. I have worked with Aspergers and autism for several years and read books about it both for work and recreation and I really don't see a problem with talking about it. In fact on the forum local_shop_girl out up in her link (which incidently is fantastic thanks for that, there is some very interesting reading) it is discussed at length. We have to be able to not take ourselves too seriously in life. I don't think Eugene does. I might meet him one day. I'll clear it with him then ;)

A fair point about discussing Eugenes' so-called 'problem' - if he has it - being unfair. But personally i think it is far healthier to discuss it than to ignore it out of fear of giving offence. Aspergers syndrome is not widely understood - the more it is discussed, the more peope will not consider it to be odd , freakish, or any other unfair description.

As Cameron said - it is like discussing other hms characters. makosi - for example - is obviously a pathological liar, Craig is - or maybe not - gay and that has been discussed at length.
