I didn't see this show, due to being one number away from one thousand pounds in the bingo (spit) but my take on the celebrity thing is thus. Coz I KNOW you have all been waiting
Before the tabloids took control, people were celebrities because of the talents they had. D.Beckham would have been a justifiable celebrity because hes a talented boy. For all the mick taken, Victoria can sing ok, but she doesnt have the voice of say a Carey or an Aguilera, something unique that identifies her. She knows that, and thats why she's tried so bloody hard to build the Beckham brand, because without it, she would quickly become Jordan.
I dont mind US making people famous, as long as theres good reason for it. I dont like the fact that we are forcefed who to like and who not to like, I prefer to use my own mind to make decisions and not have them told to me.
I dont know if any of you read the Holy Moly mailout this week, but there was a story on it about an unnamed celeb, but it was patently obvious who they were talking about even though they didn't name her, coz they mentioned a wedding, a child in hospital with a "mysterious illness" and the fact that the woman in question put the child in hospital, the nursing staff think the child is in reasonable health and the mother has apparently only visited three times since she put him there, bringing a camera crew along each time.
IF this rumour is true, then I worry for the sorts of celebrities that are being turned out for our amusement. That person therefore mentioned has no real strings to their bow as far as a talent goes, but fair play, has gone off the back of the tabloid frenzy and used it to the best ends for themselves, so maybe her talent is media manipulation and I'm underestimating her. The best businesses are made from a niche market.
I just think its gone too far. I like the fact that we have people that are seen as high achievers and the best at what they do (see Kelly Holmes) and we all have a strength that we must find and make use of, but I think that giving the message to young people that you can get rich and famous very easily simply by manipulation of the masses is hugely wrong and shouldn't be encouraged. Its no wonder we are running out of plumbers and tradesmen when everyone grows up wanting to be on Pop Idol.
We take peoples dreams and fantasies, offer them the opportunity to fulfil them and then take great pleasure in destroying them without a second thought. I don't like being party to that simply by the fact that I have to live in a country that supports that train of thought openly and without concern for the people involved.
