Big Brother winner Nadia in court for beating up a man
Transsexual Big Brother winner Nadia appeared in court today - for beating up a man in a pub.

The 29-year-old gender bender, full name Nadia Almada, spoke only to plead not guilty to a charge of common assault.

Wearing a black and white pencil skirt, a black shirt and black jacket, the blonde Big Brother 5 star looked visibly nervous as she entered the dock at Highbury Magistrates Court, north London.

It is alleged Almada slapped Richard Oliver, a jobless 24-year-old, at The Garden pub in Upper Street, Islington, on January 27 this year.

Defence solicitor Aki Achillea said: "We will call at least two witnesses. There is CCTV footage and also a considerable transcript from the police interview."

A trial will take place on June 19 and the Portuguese bank clerk, who won the C4 show in 2004, was granted unconditional bail. She faces up to six months in jail if found guilty.

Mr Achillea asked deputy district judge Alan Jones to make an order that her address not be made public because of "considerable interest" in the case.

The 29-year-old, whose full name is Nadia Almada, spoke only to plead not guilty to common assault.

Big Brother winner Nadia hit a man in a pub during a 'homophobic' altercation in which he called her George, a court heard today.

Nadia Almada, 29, is accused of common assault on Richard Oliver in the Garden Pub on Upper Street, Islington, north London, in January this year.

Mr Oliver, 25, told Highbury Magistrates' Court he had spotted the reality TV star in the pub whilst with his girlfriend, but when he approached her she told him her name was Georgia.

Mr Oliver said his bottom was pinched twice and on the second time he turned around to find Almada sitting behind him.

He told the court: "I said 'You did win Big Brother, your name is George'.

"I didn't mean any offence by it - my bottom had been pinched and I wasn't overly impressed by that fact."

He said Almada had "a bit of a hissy fit", accusing him of being homophobic, and then struck his face.

"Then I said 'Hang on a minute, you're a man, I can hit you back', and put my drink down," he said.

Mr Oliver, who has a previous conviction for actually bodily harm, said he was embarrassed and admitted that he was going to strike her back.

Almada then slapped him a second time before a bouncer came and broke up the altercation, he told magistrates.

Under cross-examination by Aki Achillea, representing Almada, Mr Oliver denied he had behaved in a "disgraceful and aggressive" manner.

He also denied saying the defendant looked and sounded like a "bloke".

"I've nothing against Nadia," he said. "She is a woman, she's a transsexual, she had an operation and she is a woman."

Almada, who appeared in court today wearing a red dress, claims she was acting in self-defence as Mr Oliver was being threatening and aggressive and verbally abusive.

The court heard from a police interview in February with the television star, in which she said she felt Mr Oliver was "very angry, very agitated" and was acting like a bully and being gender homophobic.

The case continues.

Nadia, whacks someone ? lol. What a surprise ! We all know of the earlier incidents in the house where she whacked Jason.

She called Oliver a 'homophobe'. Hmm, so Nadia sees 'itself' as gay? How interesting indeed.

Nadia could be obnoxious and spoilt at times, with a terrible temper.

But I will always defend her right to be seen as a woman.

Those of us who have always felt comfortable with our gender should thank our lucky stars that we didn't have to go through what Nadia did.

So she hits someone, again, and still the defence about her being "troubled" is carrying on being used.

Violence is not an answer to any argument, this is why I call this person "disgusting", she rides on her victim persona, so she can act in any way she wants. Masking anyones real discrimination issues.

No-ones talking about her right to be called a woman, its more about her assault, or should be, but the arguments changing, presumably because of a clever solicitor. With the normal sheep following in agreement.

BTW, isn't the fact this guy had an ABH (a fairly minor offence) from before, meant to be sub-judicee?

Well, I hate to agree with Cal, but saying the guy is an homophope, is a little ambiguous, especially as Nadia seems to have been seen snogging a lot of woman recently.

If she calls the guy a homophobe, then hes anti-gaymen. so its a strange thing to say.

BIG BROTHER star Nadia Almada was today cleared of assault after hitting a man in a pub who called her George.

Richard Oliver, 25, claimed Almada had a "bit of a hissy fit" and slapped him twice when he spoke to her in a North London pub in January.

But the celebrity transsexual told magistrates she was acting in self-defence after feeling threatened by the victim’s "homophobic and aggressive manner".

Mr Oliver told the court he spotted the winner of the reality television show's fifth series while drinking in the pub with his girlfriend, but when he approached her she told him her name was Georgia.

He said his bottom was pinched twice and on the second occasion he turned around to find Almada sitting behind him.

He went on: "I said 'You did win Big Brother, you’re name’s George.'

"I didn’t mean any offence by it - my bottom had been pinched, I wasn’t overly impressed by that fact."

He said Almada accused him of being homophobic and then struck his face.

Almada slapped him a second time before a bouncer broke up the altercation, he told the court.

She told the court her celebrity status had led people to abuse her before because of her background, and she spotted the "tell-tale signs" in Mr Oliver.

She added: "My face is what pays me my mortgage and I’m quite proud of it, I want to protect myself."

She denied suggestions from Robert Canavan, prosecuting, that she had slapped Mr Oliver because she was embarrassed, or that she was dramatising the situation.

"I was not dramatising the situation, I don’t need drama in my life, it
knocks on my door."

BIG Brother winner Nadia Almada was cleared yesterday of assaulting a pubgoer who taunted her about her sex change.

The transsexual slapped Richard Oliver in the face after he called her George.

But magistrates dismissed a common assault charge after accepting she acted in self-defence.



Nadia, 29, who won Big Brother two years ago, said: "I'm very relieved justice has been done but it's crazy so much money has been spent on bringing this to court.

"This is all because I am Nadia. If I was Mrs Smith, nothing would ever have come of it."

Unemployed builder Oliver, 25, had struck up a conversation with her in Islington, North London.

He said he was holding a beer glass, adding: "She accused me of being homophobic and this, that and the other. She was quite mad and struck me."

Nadia told magistrates at London's Highbury Corner: "I was scared of being hit with the glass. My face pays my mortgage."
