JonnyBoy can probably answer this one for me....

A stupid question really but - How do C4 manage on royalties on songs that the HM's sing while in the house???

I remember during the "roller-disco" thing last year the sound was dipped during the task to prevent C4 from having to pay out royalties!

The HM's were singing last night while around the pool and again all day today...does it count when they sing it or does it have to be the recorded song thats played??

I think any performance of a song on broadcast media (TV, Radio, Internet, Jon's head) qualifies for royalties. It doesn't even have to be the original version or even a previously released version. Hence the writer of "Happy Birthday" (as in 'to you') became a millionaire.

However, as none of the housemates can sing, I don't think Channel 4 need pay out. The droning tunelessness could be any song. ::lol::

Maybe that's why they have to pay.....cos they know no one will want to buy a record that's been tainted by the housemates.

Note sure if they've obtained a PRS license this time.

I work in radio and our license covers us for anything we play, we're only a small station. Matters not if we play a chart song or an oldie.

Some bigger ones have to submit exact lists of what was played and when, and royalties from their license gets shared out to the ones listed, rather than a general payment to 'all'.

I've also DJ'd all over, normally it's down to the venue to obtain the correct license but I've done some where we had to apply for a one-day license, again for 'general' rather than audited use.

Can't be difficult for BB to list up songs that have been mauled by the HM's for that purpose, although actual tracks (as in the disco) may differ as they changed the public perfomance license for 'original' music, as opposed to supermarket re-makes etc.

HTH

Welcome back Alan :wave:

Thats what I thought!! Cos the HM's seem to be a right bunch of "pop-idols" this year...they're all trying to show off how good they are at singing!!!

Think they're on the wrong show ${
