I think they are agnostic, isnt that where you believe there is a higher power but is not the god portrayed in any of the religions? I am not sure.

An Agnostic is someone who believes that the existance/non-existance of God(s) is unknown and unknowable.

Thing with needing proof is that it invalidates faith.

Think about it.

Faith (in God or believing he exists), means you dont need proof to believe in Him.

If I say, "I have faith in you", I''m saying that you are good for it, or that you are able for whatever, without some sort of gaurantee. Whats the point of believing in some one AFTER you have proof? Its pointless then saying, okay I believe in you.

No one''s sure if love exists or even [/i] what[/i] it is. Is it just a bunch of chemicals and hormones, that make you feel horny, give you a warm fuzzy feeling, etc? Is it part of something more? Do principles and morals have a meaning or are they just a man-made concepts?

You decide.

Lets face it, whenever we assess someone ( a Housemate say), how well they're behaving, whats annoying about them, whatever, I think, we are sub-consciously checking against how they fare according to rules and principles that [/b] we [/b] think are important. So if we support someone, we want [/b] our [/b] values to win.

Looking at the bigger picture, all that religion is is rules that are meant to [/i] help[/i] us live in harmony, keep us from troubling ourselves or others. So if we do wrong (sin), we are going against those rules ( willingly or in ignorance). There is nothing mantra-like about these rules ( don't lie, steal, kill ...) that needs them to be recited in latin or whatever. Religion can get pompous. But I dont think God is. Nor does He want us to renounce all worldly possessions and go sit on top of a mountain to gain higher consciousnes to get close to Him.

The rules give us insight and shed light. Its a spiritual light and not mental IQ. So those who watch an interview with a serial-killer who doesnt accept that killing is wrong and are confused why [/i] s/he[/i] cant see that, is viewing it in spiritual sense. Its not a mental IQ thing. They believe killing is wrong. thats why they can see it makes "sense" NOT to kill, and are incensed that such an act has been commited. The difference between spiritual and physiological is really seemless. Someone who doesnt believe killing is wrong, or that rules are just a concept is not exercising their spiritual side. Its not necessarily in your genes. Its about belief. Killers [/i] can change their mind ( really its belief) about whether what they did was wrong. Thats not to say they dont need to be punished.

Conversely its also why we watch BB. We want learn about other people. Its why we have celebrities. We believe that because they are beautiful, they also have some inherently pleasing thing in them that makes them attractive. Its why we people-watch. Why vox-pops (talking-heads to you and me) are so common from in-depth hard-hitting news to to tacky ads (and why they work). Blonde bimbo's are reviled for NOT having attractive values. If we couldnt change our beliefs/values how would we grow, why would we need to have people/values to be esteemed, celebrated?

Did you hear about the atheist, dyslexic, insomniac?

He lay in bed all night wondering if there was a dog.

(yes, I know there is a 'Jokes' forum but it seemed much better here !)

I would like to point out that this joke comes from a book: "Why Men Don't Listen and Woman Can't Read Maps" originally and as such perhaps it breaks copyright?

Sorry was'nt aimed at you particularly. More to that general argument.

Was just saying that needing proof in order to have faith would mean that the faith you then profess would be meaningless.
Its a deep subject but that I think that was pretty good bringing an off-topic post back on-topic!

Hey, if you see love in the fact that your boyfriend has smelt your farts and is still around, I say go for it! ::lol::

I wouldnt dream of knocking on your door ( even if I was the kind to go to strangers houses trying to convince them God exists, which I am not I hasten to add).

Your beliefs and what you want to place them in is your business.

One way of checking if you are in doubt and the question "Does my boyfriend love everything about me?", comes up. :lecturer:

But you cant love EVERYTHING about someone thats what makes us human!

Example - my other half insists on picking the skin on the bottom of his feet and feeds it to the dogs!

I HATE that BUT it doesnt make me LOVE him any less!!!!
