Since the end of the Big Brother House competition on 7th September 2003 in South Africa, the BB Africa housemates have been busy promoting themselves, commodities and also fund raising for different needs.

Recently the housemates were involved in the serious business of promoting HIV/AIDS awareness within the region. Several housemates visited Uganda in order to play their part in making the youth more aware of the effects of the epidemic in Africa, and to participate in workshops......

Looked in the General Chat pages and could not see where it was, but wanted to comment on this. I was shocked and horrified whilst staying in Africa/ S. Africa about the epidemic that is Aids/ HIV. I think it stems from the African public being generally misinformed about this fatal and ugly disease. I heard stories of Witch doctors giving the advice that to irradicate the disease the person has to sleep with a virgin. This is the basis of alot of the rape situation arising. This I could just about handle, however as it was made known to me the Africans can be a very promiscuous nation, and hence many men are taking children now to ensure their victims virginity is still in tact, ensuring they get healled! I was sick to my stomach that this was happening. I also spent some time in another war torn country (Croatia) helping as a Bosnian refugee volunteer...again rape and oppression was in great occurance. We may moan about this country but.....we really do not know how much 'safer' & 'secure' it is here. I'll now come down off my high horse , it's just I feel very passionate and get maddened & upset about some of the world issues were are faced with in this day and age.

When Ray and I were over there last year and visited some AIDS homes and hospices, I was delighted to see the progress they have made over the last, say, five years. Whereas before most of our donations went to medicines etc., I'd say a lot more is being spent now on education and health promotion. Getting to the root of the problem rather than treating the effects is a great step forward IMO.

They are such beautiful people, I cried and still do over how horribly & drastically their lives are cut short. How much time did you spend with them over there? It's quite a gut renching disease isn't it?

Sadly we were only over for a week but we do plan to go back this year. Hope we get decent time off at the same time as each other - might be difficult.

As for post numbers - is there a prize or something?

Oh I really hope everything goes well. I too plan to go back over. Won't go into my plans in any detail only to say.....wish I could do more. Hate injustices such as this. Get frustrated by being divided with commitments over here too. I guess you probably feel like that also? It's all I ask, please let me know how it goes over there, will you?

We are involved in various street child projects (mainly in Africa) to try and help set up homes/ hospices........so IF anyone wants to contribute please let me know. (I stress there is absolutely no pressure)

There was a fund raising evening for this last weekend and raised £8.5K , had a few tears in my eyes. Terribly humbling!!
