Cops spent £1m chasing Tommy Sheridan

POLICE chiefs today defended their decision to spend more than £1 million investigating Tommy Sheridan in the run-up to his perjury trial.

Lothian and Borders Police spent four years investigating the case, travelling the UK and Europe to interview witnesses.

Officers ranging from constables to a detective chief inspector had been involved in the investigation, costing the force almost £920,000 in staff payments between August 2006 and August this year, the News can reveal.

A further £270,000 was spent conducting the inquiry itself, including overtime payments, "transport, supplies and services".

Sheridan fails in bid to appeal NoW perjury conviction

Former MSP Tommy Sheridan will not be given leave to appeal his perjury conviction, the Scottish Courts Service confirmed today.

Sheridan was jailed for three years in January for lying under oath during his successful defamation action against the News of the World in 2006.

The now defunct tabloid printed allegations about his private life, which included that he visited a swingers' club and cheated on his wife.

He was awarded £200,000 in damages after winning his defamation case against the newspaper at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, but ended up being convicted of perjury by a jury at the High Court in Glasgow.

Sheridan has maintained his innocence, claiming he was the victim of a "vendetta" by the police and a "conspiracy" involving the News of the World and colleagues within the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP).

Following his conviction, his lawyer lodged an appeal on the grounds that Sheridan had been denied a fair trial because of the amount of publicity generated before it got under way. But the Scottish Courts Service confirmed today the latest stage of Sheridan's appeal was rejected on 2 August.

A spokesman said Lady Paton, Lord Hardie and Lord Emslie had found the case was "not arguable".

David Cameron's former communications chief Andy Coulson will appear in court in Scotland next month.

The 46-year-old was today served with an indictment to face proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow on August 6, the Crown Office confirmed.

Former News of the World editor Coulson was charged with perjury by police in 2012 after being questioned in connection to his evidence at the 2010 Tommy Sheridan trial.

He appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court in June 2013 where he made no plea or declaration and was granted bail.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The Crown Office can confirm that an indictment was served on Andrew Coulson today, 7 July 2014 and that a Preliminary Hearing is scheduled for 6 August 2014 at the High Court at Glasgow."
