Howard Keel, star of American musicals on stage and screen and later in hit 80s TV series Dallas, has died aged 85.
The son of a coal miner from Illinois, Keel - who died of colon cancer - told of a miserable childhood that changed when he discovered music.
A baritone, his hit musicals included Kiss Me Kate, Annie Get Your Gun and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
At the age of 66, his career took a new turn when he joined the cast of the TV drama about oil and greed, Dallas.
"The show was enormous," he said in 1995. "I couldn't believe it. My life changed again.
