TV Genius, the search engine for UK television, is releasing its first figures for the keywords UK viewers are searching for most on
http://www.tvgenius.co.uk.
Top of the list is football, with Star Trek and
Big Brother following closely behind.
Brian Dowling is the most searched for celebrity (140th) with Peter Kay following (166th).
“Although about half the searches are for specific TV shows, a lot of themes and sports come high up the charts,” says Tom Weiss, inventor of the TV Genius. “As well as the obvious searches for sex, we get a large number of searches for crime, cars and music, to give a few examples.”
He adds: “Celebrities may seem to come surprisingly low in the search ratings but when people sign up for email or SMS reminders, it’s a completely different story: almost a fifth of the emails we send out are for when a specific star is appearing on TV.
“Personal relevance is clearly the main factor. People are searching for their hobbies, favourite celebrities and personal interests. This is what they’re typing into the search box on
http://www.tvgenius.co.uk and we can be sure it’s what they’re going to be watching.”
