BBC News

The BBC could bring in an internet TV rating system to help people decide what to watch online.

The internet labelling system will let viewers know if BBC programmes available over the internet contain sex, strong language or violence.

Programmes that could be viewed on the internet "on-demand" are not subject to normal broadcasting watersheds.

The BBC will carry out a three-month trial with a "G" for programmes that require parental guidance.

'Peace of mind'

The BBC earlier announced plans to make internet programmes available over the internet through its MyBBCplayer.

A simulcast of BBC One or BBC Two, letting UK viewers see programmes on the web at the same time as they go out on TV, is also planned as part of the service.

BBC editorial policy adviser Rachel Hermer said: "The G label is based in research that told us people wanted a simple, easy-to-use but information-rich system that enabled them to make informed choices about what they watch.

"It offers peace of mind to those members of our audience - particularly parents - who are concerned with what children watch, without losing the freedom offered by the on-demand environment.

"We'll be using the trial to see if we've struck the right balance."
