New Order headline Peel concert
as well-loved by bands and music fans alike
New Order are to headline a concert dedicated to the late BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel.

They will be joined by The Fall and Super Furry Animals at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on 12 October.

The gig precedes the official John Peel Day on 13 October, which will celebrate the life of the respected DJ who died of a heart attack last year.

Peel's widow, Sheila Ravenscroft, said she "was looking forward to what should be a terrific night".

She said she and her family had been to some "incredible gigs involving John over the years" at Queen Elizabeth Hall.

More than 300 gigs have been organised to mark John Peel Day with concerts being held in Spain, Germany, US, New Zealand and Canada.

New Order have credited Peel with their success
Radio 1 will broadcast a six-hour show paying tribute to Peel and the music and bands he discovered.

"The amount of music lovers who have got involved in Peel Day to stage gigs is amazing," said Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt.

"With the London gig happening as well now it feels like a fitting way to honour John's memory."

Peel worked at Radio 1 for nearly 40 years on his own late-night show. He also became presenter of BBC Radio 4's Home Truths in 1998.

His career was marked by discovering and championing new artists from Joy Division to the White Stripes.

He died while on holiday in Peru in October 2004.

Tribute CD unites Peel favourites

John Peel was one of the UK's best-loved and most influential DJs
John Peel is to be remembered with a compilation CD featuring 40 of his favourite acts as the first anniversary of the broadcaster's death approaches.

Artists on the double album will range from Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie to The Smiths and Blur.

It will be released on 17 October, four days after BBC Radio 1's John Peel Day, when more than 300 gigs around the world will be dedicated to the late DJ.

Peel suffered a heart attack in Peru on 25 October 2004.

Tracks on the CD will span Peel's whole career, starting with Lonnie Donegan, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Pink Floyd and The Doors.

The Ramones, The Clash, Joy Division, New Order and The Undertones will represent the punk and post-punk eras.

Recent artists donating tracks include PJ Harvey, Pulp, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals and Orbital.

Record company Warner Strategic Marketing said the project had been "carefully vetted" by Peel's widow Sheila and their four children.

"A wonderful tribute to John and his music. This is only the tip of the iceberg of the bands and music he championed," the family said in a statement.

A portion of profits will go to charities including the Salvation Army, East Anglia's Children's Hospices and the Kariandusi School Trust.

New Order, The Fall and Super Furry Animals will play a tribute gig at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall on 12 October, a day before John Peel Day.

Dizzee Rascal, Bloc Party, KT Tunstall and Royksopp will be among the acts to dedicate gigs to the DJ on John Peel Day.

Guitar legend Jeff Beck, New Order's Peter Hook and The Futureheads will also record a cover version of The Buzzcocks' Ever Fallen In Love as a tribute single, according to Radio 1.

Peel was regarded as one of the UK's most influential music broadcasters, championing a huge array of new and alternative talent during his 40-year career.

Elton joins Peel tribute single

John Peel was renowned for championing new bands
Sir Elton John is joining a group of musicians recording a tribute song to the late DJ John Peel.

He will sing and play piano on a cover of the Buzzcocks hit Ever Fallen in Love, alongside The Who's Roger Daltrey and Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant.

The single will be first played simultaneously across all BBC radio stations on 10 October.

It will be released on 21 November, with proceeds going to the Amnesty International charity.

Newer bands including The Futureheads, El Presidente and The Datsuns will also play, along with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks.

'Passion for music'

Sir Elton said: "It is always important to remember people who encouraged and helped you early in your career.

"The thing I loved about John was his passion for new music and his praise for things he totally believed in."

Peel, who was renowned for championing new bands, died aged 65 on 26 October while on holiday in Peru.

To mark the first anniversary of his death, 13 October has been designated John Peel Day, with concerts being performed in his name around the world.

The first opportunity to see the video for Ever Fallen in Love will be on Channel 4 the same day.

A concert in London featuring New Order will be held the previous evening.

John Peel rape disclosure welcomed

A leading children's charity has welcomed the decision by the late disc jockey John Peel to talk about his rape by an older pupil at boarding school in his autobiography.

The NSPCC said celebrities could play a "vital role" in encouraging children to speak out about maltreatment and help to "break down the silence of abuse".

The charity's comments come as it was revealed how the DJ claimed to have suffered "systematic sexual abuse" at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire, which he attended from the age of 13.

The BBC disc jockey, who died a year ago at the age of 65 from a heart attack while holidaying in Peru, writes of the sexual demands made on new boys from "study monitors" who were four or five years older. He also detailed how he was raped in a public toilet by an older pupil.

A spokeswoman from the NSPCC said that celebrities who came forward to talk about abuse played a vital role in encouraging abused children to seek help.

The spokeswoman said: "Celebrities can help break down the silence of abuse. They can play a vital role in encouraging children to speak out about their maltreatment and adults to talk about abuse and recognise the signs. Three-quarters of sexually abused children don't speak out at the time. This week the NSPCC released a survey of children and young people who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. Some waited a very long time before they told someone or got help, over two years on average.

"They showed their pain in many ways. Some took overdoses, had nightmares, slit their wrists, withdrew or got angry with others before they got help. The NSPCC is sending a national child protection survey to millions of households across Britain, 90,000 have already been returned."

In his autobiography Margrave of the Marshes, serialised in the Sunday Telegraph, Peel wrote: "Another study monitor obliged me to perform an even more unwelcome service during what was supposed to be a period for doing homework. This man - and although it is tempting to name him, I'm not going to - was, I think, the only genuinely amoral person I've ever met. Towards the end of our time together, he compelled me to agree to meet him in a public toilet in the cemetery on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, where he raped me.

"Oddly enough, much as I hated the experience, I think I had become so accustomed to systematic sexual abuse that I wasn't especially traumatised by the experience. However, it was many years before I could bring myself to tell anyone what had happened to me, and when I did tell Sheila, my wife, one afternoon in the 80s as we drove through Shrewsbury and passed the cemetery toilet block, she found it, I think, more upsetting than I ever did. We have not spoken of it again."

Peel, whose real name was John Ravenscroft, had time to write only half his memoirs, which are published on October 17, but the work was completed by his wife and their four children within months of his death.
