Gunrush
ITV1 London, Sunday 23 August 9:00pm - 10:50pm 9:00pm - Doug Becket is a sweet-natured driving instructor whose wife and two teenage daughters are at the centre of his happy and comfortable life. But a trip to the local supermarket tears his world apart and sets in train a series of events that force Doug to confront his grief and guilt and reluctantly to take on the role of avenger in Richard Cottan's excellent, heart-tearing drama. Doug (the ever-dependable Timothy Spall) is thrust into a dark and alien world after his daughter is shot dead in a pointless act of bravado by a young thug after a silly argument at the shop's checkout. As his family and his marriage slowly fracture in the face of his wife's unbearable pain and anger and the seeming foot-dragging indifference of the police, Doug decides to find the culprit on his own. Though Gunrush tries to do too much in telling the parallel story of the gunman - which could make a drama on its own - and the ending is preposterous, it still packs a raw emotional punch, right from the opening scene where the girl is murdered. And both Spall and Deborah Findlay are brilliant as two decent people who have to face up to unimaginable horror.
