Victoria Goldman, who wrote a book about the race for pre-school places in Manhattan, describes it as a blood sport. This follows five families desperate to pay $20,000 to guarantee their darlings the perfect start. With an ever larger number of under-fives and middle-class parents, this means consulting admissions experts, fingers on the buzzers to obtain an application form (parents are advised not to write a CV, however gifted the toddler), lotteries and interviews. It's utterly mad and makes for compulsive viewing.
