Storyville
BBC4, Monday 14 September 10:30pm - 11:40pm In 1943, the Nazis fled Naples and the Allies arrived. The Neapolitans were free from fascism but, for want of a solid administration to fill the vacuum, prostitution and black-market trading took over. This lavishly entertaining film posits that the city's current problems of poor governance and organised crime stem from the liberators corrupting everything they touched. Scores of vivid stories are told via newsreel, home movies and, most memorably, two hilarious old buffers holding court on a Naples street corner.
