True Stories: Rough Aunties
More4, Tuesday 03 August 10:00pm - 12:15amA young girl sits quietly on the floor, dispassionately describing, with the help of a teddy bear, how a man broke into her room, grabbed her by the throat, and raped her. This is just the first of many such scenes in Kim Longinotto's powerful film about Operation Bobbi Bear, an organisation of courageous, uncompromising women in Durban, South Africa, fighting to help victims of child abuse and bring the perpetrators to justice. Though the litany of abuse, violence and institutional indifference highlighted in the film can be harrowing, the women of Bobbi Bear are so vivacious and inspirational, sometimes in the face of the deepest personal tragedy, that there is an uplifting undercurrent of hope. The simple, heartfelt message is summed up when Bobbi Bear founder Jackie tells her team: "Never stop crying for the children."
