With half her brood and husband Maurice she drives from their home in Alaska to Las Vegas, where she believes God will provide a more prosperous life. Vanessa isn't alone; every year seven million US citizens hit the road in search of the Promised Land. But her reckless optimism means they spend much of the first year living in their car. This miserable but incisive film tracks the family over four years, and worse is still to come. Maurice is a recovering drug addict, who falls off the wagon. Then the recession hits. But still Vanessa sits tight in Sin City, hoping that change will come.
