The Brit Awards 2012

ITV1, STV, UTV Tuesday 21st Feb 8pm - 10pm

Repeat Today ITV1 +1, UTV1 +1 9pm

Repeat ITV2 Sat 25 Feb 4:50pm

At last year’s Brit Awards, Adele held the audience at the O2 Arena in the palm of her well-manicured hand as she belted out that elegy for a broken love, Someone like You.

It was a defining moment for a tough, clever and explosively talented young woman. After a few worrying months of illness, Adele returns to the ceremony as both a performer and a nominee (British female solo artist; British single for Someone like You; British album for 21).

Possibly the only thing standing in Adele’s way is her ubiquity; Someone like You has replaced Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars as the track of choice when a TV show wants to score a sad bit. Or maybe the judges will surprise us by taking to their hearts PJ Harvey’s fiery anti-war album Let England Shake.

James Corden is back as host, introducing performances from Rihanna, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine and Noel Gallagher.
About this programme

James Corden returns to London's O2 to host the annual music ceremony, featuring performances by Ed Sheeran, Adele, Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Rihanna, Florence and the Machine, Noel Gallagher and Olly Murs. Ed Sheeran leads the way with four nominations, including best British Male Artist and best British Single for The A Team, while Adele and Jessie J are each in the running for three titles, and vying for best International Female Solo Artist are Beyonce, Bjork, Feist, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Emeli Sande picks up the Critics' Choice award, and the Outstanding Contribution to Music goes to Britpop band Blur, who perform a selection of their hits.

Adele named best female artist

Record-breaking star Adele took the first of the honours at the Brit Awards as she landed the best female artist prize.

The 23-year-old - up for three prizes - looked delighted by her success and shrieked: "Oh my Gawd." She beat stars such as Jessie J and Kate Bush to pick up the prize at London's O2 Arena.

Collecting the award from Kylie Minogue, she joked: "I feel like a drag queen next to you. It's been an amazing year. Thank you. I'd like to thank my record company for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be."

Adele takes away two awards on a triumphant return

Adele has capped an extraordinary 12 months, kickstarted by a transformative performance at last year's Brits, returning in triumph to take home the awards for best British female and best British album.

A year and a week ago, before delivering a mesmerising version of her heartbreak ballad Someone Like You at last year's Brits – which has now been seen more than 85m times on YouTube – Adele was trembling with nerves.
At the same venue, the O2 in Greenwich, on Tuesday Adele was recognised for the eyewatering commercial and critical success of 21, her second album. Her unashamed "breakup record" has sold a copy every seven seconds, making it one of the most successful of all time in an era when the popularity of physical albums are in relentless decline.
