The British Soap Awards 2012
Review by David Brown
Radio Times ITV1, STV, UTV Wed2nd May 8pm - 10pm
Repeat: ITV1 +1, UTV1 +1 Wed 2 May 9pm Repeat: ITV2, Sat 5 May 3:25pm It’s time once again to honour the good, evil and sexy of Soapland – although desirability does seem to be a done deal. Yet again Scott Maslen and Michelle Keegan – winners for the past three years – return to defend their titles and, let’s face it, the pair haven’t exactly gone to seed.
Someone who definitely wasn’t looking too clever back on New Year’s Day was EastEnders’ Pat. Her demise is up for Best Exit and Best Single Episode (it really was the end of an earring, sorry, era), although she faces strong competition from Corrie’s Becky, who departed after triumphantly debagging Tracy. Yet even if these trophies go Weatherfield’s way, actress Pam St Clement must surely be due a Lifetime Achievement accolade after a quarter of a century’s service.
As for storylines, both Easties and Corrie ought to make way for Emmerdale, where the moral implications of euthanasia were explored through the plight of tetraplegic Jackson. It was a powerful plot handled with great sensitivity.
