Sony Radio Academy Award Winners
A pair of elderly radio stars have written themselves into the history books by becoming the oldest winners of one the industry's most prestigious accolades.
Golden oldies Beryl Renwick, 86, and Betty Smith, 90, took the best entertainment programme prize at the Sony Radio Academy Awards last night - often viewed as the radio industry's equivalent of the Oscars.
The humorous double act beat off younger rivals including 6 Music's Adam & Joe and Absolute Radio's Frank Skinner to land the gong for their weekly show on BBC Radio Humberside.
The hour-long easy listening programme has gathered a cult following over the past six years, with the elderly pair bantering with co-host David Reeves about matters such as fashion, the war and their love of crooner Michael Buble.
Football pundits Andy Gray and Richard Keys also scored a top award, taking home best sports programme for their Talksport show little over a year after they disappeared from TV screens in disgrace after a sexism furore.
The ceremony saw another remarkable comeback as BBC Radio 6 Music, which had been earmarked for oblivion by corporation bosses, was named UK station of the year.
It is the first time a digital-only service has been given the prized accolade, beating sister station Radio 2 to the award.
