Furore Over Eurovision Entry

The BBC's decision to select singing legend Engelbert Humperdinck as the UK's brightest hope to win Eurovision for the first time since 1997 is causing something of a furore.

According to the Daily Mail, the BBC has been "swamped" with complaints about the 76-year-old crooner with some arguing that in the Olympic year it is not showing the UK to be a "young hip place" to be.

A number of comments on BBC's website claimed that perhaps the strategy is to win by cornering the "middle-aged women vote from all across Europe".

Buranovo Grannies to represent Russia at Eurovision

Image

With their embroidered aprons, their headscarves and their ringing voices, the Buranovo Grannies seem like the perfect ensemble for a village wedding.

The "singing babushkas" beat 24 other contenders including a popular rapper and the 2008 winner of the contest, Dima Bilan, to win Russia's nomination to the epically kitsch competition on Wednesday evening.

I shall be singing that flipping song all day now! It is very catchy. Those boys have such energy and enthusiasm and they really put on a performance worth watching. It is obvious that they really enjoy what they are doing and it comes across in their performance. Even if they go wrong with the singing or dancing, they have the confidence to pull it off. It is very hard to put all that energy into a performance and sing at the same time, so there is a chance it could go wrong on the night, but I hope they do well at Eurovision. ()^

:-? There is nothing in that song or performance that captures me. It's the sort of song that I would take a toilet break to! Also, I don't know if any of you have ever printed off a marking sheet for Eurovision, so you can mark the entries as they come on, but if you have, you will know that there are spaces for marks for outfits and entertainment value (dancers etc), as well as the actual song itself, so if everyone marks like that, we won't get many marks!

Actually, it gets better the more you listen to it, but unfortunately at Eurovision, you need one to be good from the off. However, I think most people will either love the song or hate it. A lot of youngsters who vote will hate it, but maybe some of the juries will like it, so you never know!
