With tears, tantrums and spells in psychiatric wards, no one quite knows what's going on in the frazzled mind of Britney Spears.
Except us, of course.
Sipping champagne cocktails in the VIP section of the Avalon nightclub in LA, we schmoozed with Brit's cousin, Alli Sims - and got the lowdown on the star's confused state of mind.
Following Brit's latest spell in rehab, Alli, 26, revealed the desperate pleas with the troubled singer to give up showbiz altogether. She also admitted that the Toxic star's concerned family have set up a round-the-clock vigil for the singer. "Britney desperately wanted to come out with us to party tonight but we had to tell her 'no'," she told us.
"She needs to rein herself in. She needs to take a break from the limelight - from showbiz - and just concentrate on getting herself better, and being with her family."
Pausing only to compliment us on our Harrods frocks, Brit's former personal assistant continued: "Every day's a struggle but Britney is getting a bit better day by day.
"I was with her today and, as a family, we take it in turns to be with her and watch over her 24/7. But it was just great that she was able to come out with us earlier - it's a small step but an important one. Britney is so anxious and so on-the-edge right now. She is incredibly keen to go out and doesn't understand when we tell her that it's not a good idea.
"But, at the same time, she desperately wants to be with her boys and be a great mother - and we want her to be as well.
"She just needs to have a break for as long as it takes until she's completely better. We are with her 100 per cent of the way."
Alli, wedged between pop stars Pink, Kelis and, er, us, also let slip that Britney's romance with British photographer Adnan Ghalib is going from strength to strength.
