Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Eurovision Song Contest 2012: Semi-Final One
BBC3, TUESDAY, 22ND May 8 -10PM

Eurovision Song Contest 2012: Semi-Final One
BBC3, 24th May 8 - 10pm

To the Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan, where Scott Mills and Sara Cox present coverage of the song contest’s even less salubrious qualifying rounds.

Among fancied acts trying to win a place in Saturday’s line-up are Russia (yokelly grannies uncertainly bellow Europop), Denmark (woman with fringed epaulettes sings dated 90s-style ballad), Montenegro (jarring, syncopated rap by a geezer who looks like he necks Special Brew), Iceland (perfectly groomed couple do dramatic pop with violins) and Ireland (Jedward). There’s more of the same on Thursday at 8pm.
About this programme

Scott Mills and Sara Cox present coverage of the first semi-final of the 57th edition of the musical extravaganza from the Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan, which is hosting the contest for the first time after Ell and Nikki's victory in Dusseldorf in 2011. Following their eighth-place finish last year, pop twins Jedward are once again representing Ireland, and will be hoping to secure one of the 10 spots available in Saturday's final. Other hotly tipped acts include Russian grannies Buranovskiye Babushki, Danish busker Soluna Samay and Icelandic duo Greta Salome & Jonsi, while eccentric Montenegrin Rambo Amadeus and San Marino's Valentina Monetta are among the more intriguing outsiders. Scott and Sara are also joined by UK representative Engelbert Humperdinck to look ahead to the final. Viewers in the UK cannot vote in tonight's semi-final.

Unfortunately for us, according to Popbitch:-

Quote:
The UK's Eurovision entry this year
is sweet, understated, classy. Sadly
for Engelbert, he got a disastrous
draw - first up. The UK were drawn first
in 1976 - when Brotherhood of Man won
- but that was a long time before phone
voting made the draw so important.

If that is true, being first is the worst possible position. :-? On the X Factor, it is nearly always the ones who go first or second who get voted off, because people forget the first ones. Also, sometimes people may be late tuning in, due to forgetting it is on, and so miss the first ones. The fact that we were not in any of the Semi Finals means that people won't already have heard our song and also that Englebert won't have had the practice run, like the semi finalists had. There are so many songs in the Eurovision Song Contest, that being on first we will definitely be forgotten. I know that I always forget the early ones, unless they stand out as being exceptional.

I knew it would be disastrous us going first! I thought Englebert gave a good performance though. Last year I remember thinking it wasn't fair that they opened the phone lines from the start, then this year just when we went first, they didn't do that! :-? I found it hard to understand why the UK gave 12 points to Spain - maybe it is because they said they didn't want to win!! Mind you, she did have a good voice, but there were lots of good singers there last night (excluding Jedward and the Grannies, but they were good for entertainment value). I do actually like Jedward though. It's not easy to sing well when you are dancing also. I thought they should have come higher really and so should we.

It's a load of b*****'s Chritstine -if it weren't for the money the UK put into the event it would never happen so why should we hand ourselves up to be slapped in the face year in year out!? :8o:
I didn't for a minute think we had a chance - no matter what position in the line up we were - plus, the song was not very good, imo, Jedward on the other hand had a good song/act but it seems the UK and Ireland are not getting the respect they deserve so both countries should leave them to it...
