Bushell's back

Bushell: took redundancy from the People in February to concentrate on writing film scripts

Bushell on the Box is back in a national newspaper, just three months after the acerbic Garry Bushell left the world of TV reviewing.

The veteran TV critic has joined Daily Star Sunday after taking redundancy from the People in February to concentrate on writing film scripts. Bushell's first Daily Star Sunday column will appear this weekend.

Since leaving the People, Bushell has written a screenplay about East End band Cockney Rejects and is writing the screenplay for his novel The Face.

"I'm delighted to be writing for the Daily Star Sunday - a great working-class red-top with bundles of energy, and a terrific Paul Ross current affairs column," Bushell said.

"The other Sunday red-tops look tired and dull in comparison. I had knocked Bushell on the Box on the head to concentrate on my books and film scripts, which are all coming along nicely," he added.

"But I missed the buzz of a weekly deadline. Gloves off, it's clobberin' time!"

The Daily Star Sunday deputy editor, Michael Booker, said: "We couldn't be happier here at the Daily Star Sunday to have got one of the star names of the newspaper world doing what he does best - making people laugh at the TV world every week."

"If you listen carefully, you can hear Ian Hyland, Kevin O'Sullivan and Jon Wise quaking in their loafers.

"With the package we've now got on offer every Sunday I wouldn't be surprised if the opposition just packed it all in."

Bushell left the People in February after five years. He agreed to take voluntary redundancy the previous November and was understood to be one of the People's highest paid writers with a salary in excess of £120,000

He departed during a cost-cutting programme when 14 journalists were axed including the investigations editor, Roger Insall, and the showbiz editor, Debbie Manley.

Bushell joined the People in 2001 after a long stint at the Sun ended in him being sacked.

The paper cited "gross misconduct" after The Face was serialised in the rival Daily Star. guardian

Caption This: Paris Hilton’s Low Sodium Diet

britney-justin.jpgPARIS HILTON has been sentenced today to 45 days at the Century Regional Detention Centre, Los Angeles County's jail for women.

Inside, Paris can expect a diet of three low-sodium meals a day (insert joke here). Beef and pork are not allowed (and again).

"I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all," says Paris in court.

"It's all poultry-based", says Captain Alice Scott. anorak

'I Never Drive Just Because I Want To'

The socialite Paris Hilton has been jailed for 45 days for driving offences.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer ruled that the hotel heiress violated her probation for a previous traffic offence by knowingly driving without a valid licence.

He rejected the defence that she did not realise she was banned from driving and ordered her to report to a county detention facility on June 5.

As she was sentenced the 26-year-old wept and her mother, Kathy, yelled at the prosecutor, "You're pathetic," as the packed courtroom cleared.

The decision capped a two-hour hearing in which prosecutors argued that Hilton was thumbing her nose at the court and seeking to be placed above the law, while defence
lawyers said she was being singled out for harsh treatment because of her celebrity.

Taking the witness stand, the star of the reality TV show "The Simple Life" testified that she was unaware her driving privileges had been completely suspended at the time police stopped her and impounded her car on Feb. 27.

Hilton said her publicist, Elliot Mintz, had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons after the first 30 days of her license suspension late last November, and that she relied on what he had said.

But the judge said he did not believe Hilton, pointing to a notice she had received from a police officer, and had signed, during another traffic stop in January.

He said Hilton had "completely ignored" that notice, which she had carried in her glove box for weeks.

"In my opinion, there's not doubt that she knew that her licence had been suspended," the judge said.

In a final statement before she was sentenced, Hilton, denied that she had sought to flout the law.

"I did what I was told. I would never drive just because I want to.

"I follow the law and I respect the law. From now on I want to pay complete attention to everything," she said.

"I just want to say I'm sorry."

Her lawyer says she will appeal. Skenews

Judge silences Baldwin court row

Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin were married for almost nine years
Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin's latest court hearing has been held in private after a judge said their daughter found the public row "emotionally traumatic".

The actors, who divorced five years ago, are locked in a bitter custody battle over 11-year-old Ireland.

It escalated two weeks ago when Baldwin was heard in a leaked phone message calling the girl a "thoughtless pig".

Superior Court Commissioner Maren Nelson said the media were banned to protect "the well-being of the child".

She closed Friday's session to the public soon after it began and sealed records filed in connection with the hearing.

Kim Basinger sat in the back row of the gallery at the hearing
"I recognise there is significant media interest in this matter," she said. "[But] it's not in the best interests of the child for this to be further broadcast by the media."

Basinger was present at the hearing but Baldwin was not, saying he feared his comments would be leaked to the media.

There were reports that the hearing was held to decide whether to alter Baldwin's visiting rights in the wake of the tape revelation.

Basinger's lawyer Neal Hersh said a decision was reached but he would not reveal the outcome.

"We are very, very pleased with the judge's thoughtful decision about what happened here today," he said afterwards.

Baldwin has said he was "driven to the edge by parental alienation"
Baldwin's lawyer Vicki Greene said the leaking of the voicemail was "not appropriate, and it's not in Ireland's best interest, and it will be with her for the rest of her life".

A further hearing will be held on 5 June to investigate who leaked the tape.

Baldwin recently appeared on US TV to apologise for his rant. In an earlier statement, he said he was "driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years".

The actor's rant, in which he accused his daughter of humiliating him, was apparently sparked by his repeated failure to reach her by telephone.

The message said: "You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being... I don't give a damn that you're 12 years old or 11 years old or that you're a child or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass."

He also threatened to "straighten your ass out" during a forthcoming visit. BBC

I'm the only gay on Blue Peter

BLUE Peter bosses are close to unveiling the husband of Little Britain star Matt Lucas as their new presenter.

Matt’s partner Kevin McGee, 31, is set to make the switch from behind the cameras after impressing show chiefs.

Cheshire-born Kevin is set to follow in the footsteps of presenters Konnie Huq, 31, Andy Akinwolere, 23, Zoe Salmon, 24 and Gethin Jones, 26, on the next series of the BBC1 show, to become its 33rd host. It is not clear if any of the current hosts are moving on.

A Beeb source said: “Kevin has already enjoyed a successful career behind the camera but now he wants to try his luck at a bit of presenting.

“Kevin was not really on the radar.

“But after he stepped out in his Prince Charming-style panto outfit, at the party following his civil partnership with Matt last December, a lot of people started to notice him.

“He has a great personality which really comes through in front of the camera. He is a natural – TV dynamite.”

Kevin met Matt, 33, at Bristol University more than ten years ago.

Matt went on to become one of the biggest names in British TV with comedy sidekick David Walliams, 35.

Kevin has worked on a string of successful TV shows including Comic Relief: Red Nose Night Live 2005 and The Real Little Britain.

At the star-studded pantomime ball after their “wedding”, Matt dressed as a genie while Kevin was the Prince.

Last night our Beeb source added: “Kevin has been interviewed by the BBC and they are really excited about the prospect of working with him.

“It is almost a done deal – just a couple of things need to be ironed out.” dailystarsunday

GEORGE: I’M GUILTY

Mirror.co.uk

SINGER George Michael today admitted driving while unfit through drugs and said he felt "very ashamed".

The 43-year-old told a judge he had been "very stupid" and was prepared to accept his punishment.

The former Wham! star, real name George Panayiotou, was arrested in north London last October after being found slumped at the wheel of his car.

Michael pleaded guilty to being unfit to drive through drugs at Brent Magistrates’ Court. A second charge was dropped.

Addressing District Judge Katherine Marshall, he said: "I did something very stupid and I am very ashamed since doing it."

He added: "I really have been very distressed by this whole thing.

"I am perfectly aware that I did something very wrong and got into my car when I was unfit to drive.

"I was not in my normal physical state and I'm perfectly prepared to accept the correct punishment for that and I would have accepted it a long time ago.

"It was fairly predictable considering how much work I had done that week."

Michael will be sentenced on May 30.

The singer is due to play the first concert at the new Wembley Stadium on June 9 and will include the gig on his British and European stadium tour.

His European tour kicks off in Denmark on May 18, with the UK leg seeing him perform in London, Norwich, Manchester, Glasgow and Plymouth. [/url]

Taxi For Doherty: F*ckwit Offers Cabbie Kate Moss’s Stuff

YOU join us on Camden Road, a bleak stretch of North London tarmac. Pete Doherty, lover to Kate Moss, is in the company of a stricken MG BGT car.

He calls a cab. Taxi driver Roland Andrews, perhaps unaware of Doherty’s reputation, and unconcerned for his seat covers’ wellbeing, agrees to pick Doherty up.

He takes Doherty to Moss’ home in nearby St John’s Wood.

Roland: He was up there for five minutes and comes rushing out with some belongings including a battered suitcase, an empty picture frame and his guitar.”

Is Doherty heading for an interview on Desert Island Discs, these the belongings he would like to be stranded with?

Roland: “Then all of a sudden Kate comes running out in her skimpy nightdress and hurls a glass at my cab.”

Had Doherty forgotten it?

Roland drives off. Doherty is now in the back.

Roland: “As I started driving he tried to explain the ruckus, saying ‘Women trouble. I’ve messed up my life… Then he stared going on about getting another implant to stop the drugs having an effect on him and turn his life around.”

Indeed, if the implant can stop the drugs having an effect, imagine how many drugs Doherty can take. The mind boggles.

On Roland and Doherty press. It is 4:30 am when they arrive at Moss’s Cotsworlds home. The fare is £250. Doherty reaches into his pockets – guitar, picture frame, suitcase, broken glass. He finds £100.

Roland: “He asked me to help him unload his stuff into Kate’s house and then he said, ‘If there’s anything here you want then help yourself to it. The missus won’t mind.”

But Roland resisted. “I was hardly going to take someone’s belongings so of course I said no.”

And apologetic Doherty gave Roland his accountant’s number and told him to call and the difference would be made good. Roland called. The accountant knew nothing about it.

“It was an experience,” says Roland. “Although I’ve lost out on £150.”

And get a load of those seat covers…

Jerry Garcia's guitars spur Grateful Dead auction

Forty years after the Summer of Love celebrated the free-living ways of the 1960s counterculture, bidders paid more than $1.1 million at auction on Tuesday for Grateful Dead memorabilia.

A cream-colored 1975 Travis Bean electric guitar belonging to the band's legendary, late lead guitar player, Jerry Garcia, brought in $312,000 in a brisk sale, auction house said.

Enthusiasts also bid $102,000 for an acoustic guitar and $39,000 for a Gibson electric guitar played by Garcia.

One of his leather guitar straps sold for $20,400, or four times its initial asking price, and his flight case filled with guitar picks, strings and other accessories sold for $16,800.

The auction house Bonhams and Butterfields held the auction in San Francisco on behalf of Rudson Shurtliff, son of Lawrence "Ram Rod" Shurtliff, the late road manager and president of the Grateful Dead's corporation.

Formed in the mid-1960s, the Grateful Dead were a San Francisco area legend who rose to fame as the city became a counterculture mecca. The band often gave free concerts, including several during the 1967 "Summer of Love" in which thousands with little money flocked to San Francisco.

"Overall it was a very good sale," said Margaret Barrett, director of the entertainment memorabilia department at Bonhams and Butterfields. "I think the bidders were excited."

Last month Jimi Hendrix's 1966 Red Fender Mustang guitar sold for $400,000 and the Gibson Les Paul guitar of U2's The Edge fetched $240,000 at an auction.

Lily nipsup a big frenzy

CHEEKY Lily Allen let slip much more than she bargained for when she promoted her new brand of Lily Loves clothes at High Street store New Look yesterday.

And the 22-year-old singer more than made fans Smile in this midnight blue dress – minus the bra – as she signed hundreds of autographs in Manchester.

One shopper said: “Lily was so down to earth it was brilliant and she saw the funny side when her dress slipped away.

“She actually didn’t give two hoots.”

The gorgeous gal is on a serious mission to promote her top-notch togs.

And she is certainly having a laugh along the way.

Looking fresh-faced and feisty, you’d never have thought that the little minx had been out on the town living it up the night before.

She repaired to London’s Groucho club after launching her brand of clobber at

New Look’s flagship Oxford Street store. And the lovely lass had oodles of fun with her dad – actor Keith, 53 – and a bevy of friends.

And despite her clothes being down to earth and affordable, we couldn’t help clocking the designer bag that she was clutching hold of all night. dailystar
