The day after he finished work on his 882-page biography of London, author Peter Ackroyd was struck down by a massive heart attack.

This was entirely in keeping with his descriptions of the city. As he states in his new BBC2 profile of the capital, "London feeds off its people, it devours them in an endless appetite for power and profit."
