He must feel really drained. :-(

I agree Scotslass, she sounds like she needs professional help. Sounds as if she suffering from Co-dependency. I hope she finds the strength in herself to confront her fears, take some time out of the relationship, challenge what she is feeling with help of the professional support network and continue with the support thereafter. Perhaps following all that, alone then could/ should they start up a 'health' relationship.

He obviously must like her a lot, to deal with that on a daily basis.

Would be interested in hearing what his opinion on it is. It sounds like quite a few boundaries need to be put in place and withheld to make things work out properly.

Same here! He goes mad when I put E4 on when he's home. He can bear the CH4 show but thinks with E4 it's just too much. He doesn't understand!!
