ITV and the BBC are to make rival Sherlock Holmes dramas, pitting Stephen Fry against Rupert Everett in his first major British TV acting role for 20 years.
The channels have commissioned new interpretations of the fictional sleuth of 221B Baker Street and the dramas will be screened within months of each other.

Everett will star as Holmes in a TV movie planned for BBC1's Christmas schedule, nipping in ahead of ITV1, which is not expected to have its Fry drama on the air until next year.

This is a tough one to call, I cant pick between the two. :-?

Both have excellent qualities to play Holmes, good choices both of them.

I love the series with Jeremy Brett. He played Sherlock Holmes with such intensity, dark, drug addict (which was how he was written) out of society that I would feel sorry for any actor trying to recreate the character that was so beautifully portrayed.

Jeremy Brett was a complete genius.

Very fine actor as Sherlock Holmes, Brett was. This is the person who they must compete with (Apart from those of us, who remember Basil Rathbone) I also agree.

That is the thing most people dont understand when it comes to Holmes, he was a hero with a drug addiction. Most people dont know that about him and like you said it was written that way.

Yes I remember the Basil Rathobone ones, they were so good. I liked the fact that they were made in black and white as they were full of atmosphere they seemed very dark. I think some movies are suited to be made in Black White.

I read that once that Basi Rathobone was a great swordsmen.

I wish the actors above a lot of luck. I would be worried to follow such great actors.

Oh yes, Basil Rathbone every week morning during the school summer holidays. I must have seen every one of those Sherlock Holmes films. I enjoyed Jeremy Brett immensly (though we shant mention that embarrasing brief role he had in the Battle Star Galactica tv series).

But having Stephen Fry in the role is a bit of miscasting in my opinion, but I hope to be proved wrong.
