Kelly, who both wrote and directed the movie, has made a director's cut with 21 minutes of extra footage, a re-mastered print, a new sound mix and enhanced visual effects.
The Donnie Darko Director's Cut will essentially include everything the director would have included originally if he'd had the time and money.
He said the extra footage would go beyond extra scenes released on DVD versions of the film and says much of it has never been seen.
"In the back of my mind I did think that maybe one day I'd get to do a director's cut so I saved some stuff that would be a real surprise for people," he said.
