Here's a short description from one site:
"A routine legal assessment turns into an horrific nightmare for a young solicitor. In this spine chilling, Victorian ghost story, Arthur Kidd is sent to settle up the estate of a dead client Alice Drablow.
When he arrives at the small village of Crythin Gifford he comes up against strong local prejudice and superstition. During the course of his work he is haunted by the sight of a sinister, mysterious woman dressed all in black who, according to local custom, has put a curse on the village.
In saving the life of a young gypsy girl Kidd becomes embroiled in the macabre curse that haunt the village. His innocent interference fuels the wrath of the menacing figure known as The Woman In Black."
I think one of the creepiest things about the story is the location of the house. It's a big manor house totally isolated out in the marshes and nowhere near other civilisation, and the fact that you can only travel to and from there when the tide is low because when its high you are blocked in

And that's what happens, he has to stay there at some point.
There are some good reviews
here that sum it up well. My DVD version should be coming today!
