Mercurcy Prize favourites Franz Ferdinand have scooped the prestigious music award.

The Glasgow-based rock band fulfilled bookies' expectations to take the £20,000 prize with their self-titled first album.

The four-piece outfit's debut album has soldmore than one million copies worldwide since released in February and achieved critical praise.

They beat rapper Ty, solo singer Amy Winehouse and The Zutons to the prize.

But it was second time unlucky for chart-topping rapper Mike Skinner, alias The Streets.

He lost out in 2002 with his debut album Original Pirate Material to Ms Dynamite.

A total of 12 acts were in the running for the Mercury Prize.

Others included hot teenage soul sensation Joss Stone, Keane and Belle and Sebastian.

Dance act Basement Jaxx, R'n'B star Jamelia, Northern Irish quartet Snow Patrol and 59-year-old British musician Robert Wyatt were the other artists in the running.

i love the intro to Take Me Out- like how it's different from the rest of the song then the rhythm slowly changes.
