Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn and his family have been honoured AFI Associates of the American Film Institute for their "creative contributions" to the entertainment industry.

Penn's mother Eileen Ryan Penn, brother Chris and wife Robin Wright Penn were honoured on Friday, along with his singer-songwriter brother Michael and sister-in-law Aimee Mann.

Actor Martin Sheen was on hand to fete the family patriarch, director Leo Penn.

Previous recipients include the families of Henry Fonda and Debbie Reynolds.
