Britain's public broadcaster said on Saturday it would press ahead with plans to televise Jerry Springer -- The Opera, despite receiving a record number of complaints before the expletive heavy musical has even aired.

Mail and Guardian online

I don't know if anyone watched this. I watched the first half as it had been a huge talking point and I was interested to see for myself. Yes it was full of swearing and sexual content. Some of it a bit random like the bloke who liked to wear a nappy and wanted to walk around 'sh*tting in his trousers' ${ and was obviously aimed to shock those of a more delicate disposition :-? Anyhow the part that made me decide I couldn't watch the second half was when a cross was burn't on the stage. Offensive to all christians I am sure. While I fully advocte freedom of speech and peoples right to choose or not choose a way of life/faith etc my argument is this. I doubt very much if another religion was going to be made a complete mockery of in this way, that the show would have been allowed to go ahead?? To me it spoke of complete double standards and a total disregard for those people who take their faith very seriously. I struggle to see what public service the BBC provided.

Complaints can me made to contact@ofcom.org.uk. I contacted them before the show was aired but was told they could do nothing about it until the show had been aired which proves rather pointless really!

HC: Unshockable but in this case offended ()^

Ofcom is a pants organisation. They allowed an advert showing a man hanging by his fingers from a great height after his ladder slipped away and woman running to move her car out of the way so it doesn’t get damaged when he falls to his death, even after she had moved the car she walks slowly away clearly not giving a smeg about the mans life, disgusting on my view

Ofcom rebutted by complaint that this was very poor display of moral values.

As a whole I am against censorship for ADULTS, but like you I am puzzled that the Beeb allowed anything with such religious attacks to be allowed play time. Though its refreshing that the religion concerned would teach turn the other cheek and not issue a fats whaller what ever it is on the writers head.

I agree blags about the censorship for adults comment. On the whole people should be free to chose what they do and don't watch provided there is adequate warning before hand. However I think they knew what they were up against on this one. They KNEW it was going to offend a religious group hugely but carried on regardless and that is what I am most annoyed about.

:D

I quite agree HC - and personal experience has led me to a similar opinion on past events.

I just don't watch things if I think I will be offended by them. Don't watch much TV anyway.

I hardly ever watch tv myself. I think in this particular case 'just not watching' would mean christians were condoning it IMHO. :-?

I really dind't feel in this particular case I could just not watch, tho that is what I tend to do normally if I think I am liable to be offended. You have to pick your battles I feel.

Like I say this is just my humble opinion which probably counts for nothing anyway but makes me feel better all the same.

sorry if I sound like a radical. It's not often I really get on my soap box about something

The burning cross thing was a KKK reference. Good job you stopped watching there HC, that was nothing to what came next!

Personally I don't know what the fuss is about. Is it because it's the BBC showing it?
All it was was a musical song and dance send up of a show thats been on tv every day of the week for years now. Nothing worse in this big stage show than what you would see if you watched the tv show IMO. (Apart from having a soundtrack)

I think the main cause of offence to me was the portrayal of Jesus/mary and joseph and like I say the burning of the cross. I haver made no secret of this in the past too. I did mean to watch the whole thing Heidi but gave up about 5 mins into the second half. I wasn't aware of the story line while it was on stage though my feelings would be the same. I just feel if for example a muslim god was going to be portrayed in this way it probably wouldn't be allowed. :-?

Yep that's true. Probaby due to other reasons that concern fear of reprisals by certain religous group nutters but I shouldn't even say that out loud, but hey I always offend someone!

I do still wonder though why there is this big mass media broo-haha when like I said before, the programme has been on for years and I've seen some freaky sh1t on there in the past.
They wanted us all to watch it!!!!!!

Well to begin with, I am not a man. And secondly I hardly think that by choosing not to watch something ( as I choose not to most days of the week) means that I am encouraging evil to prosper.

I agree that Christianity often seems to get the worst deal, especially considering that we live in a supposed Christian society. But I also object to dramas which depict women being raped, people being beated up etc etc. TV is full of things which I don't consider entertainment. However. lots of people watch them.

If I were to complain about everything I object to I would get myself worked up and upset about the world every day. I have to decide what is best for me. I know what goes on on the TV but it doesn't mean I have to watch it.

I switch off and read or I watch a video or I come on here.

I know you are a Christian. But some people are not. Are they evil? :-?

keep your hair on Milly :-? Not for one second did I say any person was evil or if I did please show me! Secondly nor did I aim that comment at you or anybody else directly. I just quoted it as a well known saying (or it is where I am from!) and my reason as to why I chose to do something about it in this instance.

Well I had just said that if I think I will find something offensive I don't watch it and then you said

So yes, I did feel that it was aimed in some sense at me.

And after you had written your earlier complaint about the programme would you have liked it if I had written 'keep your hair on HC'?

:-?
