Chancellor's send-off for Mirror battlebusBy Nick Webster

CHANCELLOR Gordon Brown and Live 8 mastermind Sir Bob Geldof led a host of stars who gave the Daily Mirror's Make Poverty History battlebus a rousing send-off yesterday.

We are taking the fight to end world poverty to Scotland, where the leaders of the G8 countries meet next week. And two of the driving forces behind the campaign to end African debt were there to cheer us off.

Mr Brown said: "The more miles this bus travels the more people will join the campaign. The more people who see such a prominent newspaper as the Daily Mirror leading the way to Edinburgh then the more pressure will be put on world leaders to take action against poverty."

Mr Brown will be in the Scottish capital on Saturday but joked he would be taking a much quicker route than the battlebus, which will be stopping off in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle on the way. "The bus is a fantastic idea," he said.

Sir Bob took time off from organising this Saturday's Live 8 concerts in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Toronto, Tokyo and Johannesburg.

He said: "I'd love everyone to join in behind the Daily Mirror's bus with their cars and make their way up through the country to Edinburgh.

"We know half the world's population will be watching Live 8.

"That's more than 2.5 billion people - and it's coming out of this country. It's incredible."

Sir Bob said Daily Mirror readers could really help the Make Poverty History by wearing the white wristbands or by going to http://www.live8live.com and signing the petition.

The Mirror is selling the wristbands on the bus for £1. You can also get them from Oxfam shops or text BAND to 87140.

TV presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan waved off the Mirror bus. Judy said: "I hope everyone gets behind this fantastic cause." Husband Richard added: "This opportunity to Make Poverty History doesn't come along very often. We need to go for it."

Liberty X, former EastEnders star Chris Parker, TV presenter Brian Dowling, Eurovision star Javine and the Daily Mirror's 3am girls also waved off the Mirror bus.

Actor Chris said: "I went to Africa and I was totally taken aback by the poverty." Kelli, of Liberty X, added: "This campaign really strikes a chord with everybody."

In Scotland yesterday, Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd urged everyone to join the Edinburgh rally on Saturday.

He said: "We have to come out on the streets to say that 30,000 children can't be allowed to die every day. It's an outrage."

Live 8, which handed out 150,000 free tickets for Saturday's concert in Hyde Park, London, made another 55,000 tickets available to watch the event on giant screens.

are Coldplay not the blandest band ever?

What has happened to music in the last five years? We have VH1 blue print blandness where bands like Snow Patrol, Keane, Coldplay and Travis are all considered to be cutting edge.

NOT EVERY SONG NEEDS TO BE A ******* BALLAD
