Just watched Sky One for an hour of some woman I've never heard of before trying to defend chavs. It was basically her using lots of examples why chavs are great and shouldn't be treated the way they are by the public.

I don't think I heard one word of sense throughout it from her, absolutely ridiculous to me. She tried to claim that by the definition of chav, people like Mozart would be classed as one. She also tried to use Lizzy Bardsley from Wife Swap as an example to show why chavs are good! I live approximately 15 minutes walk away from Lizzy Bardsley and she makes our town look awful whenever she shows her mug!!

Too many youths think being chavs entitles them to behave like yobs, smash things up, beat people up and generally cause terror on our streets. This terror is escolating beyond control, how can people defend this?

Did anyone else watch the programme?

My problem with the word 'chavs' is the blatant double standards...Somehow I can't imagine The Daily Mail calling people of ethnic origin 'chavs' and yet working-class whites are fair game....Stupid moral vapidity, unnecessary stigmatisation of members of society is a slippery slope towards more social unrest

The woman is Julie Burchill I think,columnist....

I heard once that chavs are regarded as model citizens and 'punks' are awful, evil people who need to be destroyed.

but isn't it all to do with familiarity and relative size of 'ethnic' group? that's why white working classes are fair game. that's why we can pick on the French but would be a bit much to pick on, say, people from I dunno, Bangladesh or wherever. That's why we can pick on white working-class because we assume they have relative power to defend themselves.

I don't think chavs has anything to do with being working-class or being white - it's more about style and a way of life. two of the biggest chavs around are Posh and Becks.
