Wonderland
BBC2, 9:45pm - 10:30pm Thursday 12 November Staffordshire bull terriers have a fearsome reputation. To many, the breed seems brutal and thug-like and they'd cross the street to avoid them. But for others this is the very reason they like them. This straightforward film starts with the birth of seven "Staffy" puppies in East Ham, east London, an area where Staffies are very popular, and follows them to their new homes. One is sold to Jamie, an unemployed lad who has anger issues but wants a dog to keep his young daughters safe on the street; another goes to a woman whose husband died recently and who wants to bring some love back in to her home as well as give a focus to her young teenage sons. This is no quirky portrait of a litter of cute puppies. Rather it's a dispiriting snapshot of a certain section of British society. One that will occasionally make you hold your head in your hands.
