Jean Simmons, who died on January 22 aged 80, was a British film star of the Forties who made a partly sucessful transition to Hollywood in the Fifties and Sixties.

Simmons, who won an Emmy for her role in the The Thorn Birds during the 1980s, died Friday evening at her home in Santa Monica, her agent told the LA Times. She had been suffering from lung cancer.
