I read somehting like this in Heat before seeing it and completely disagree: It would be like saying the Disney version of Aladin is about family virtues...there is one main conversation about religion, and a few VERY BRIEF mentions through the film! As for Independance day, you are right...its not an Alien Invasion KABLOOM KABLOOM film, but it does focus strongly on the Aliens at points. Sorry to disagree so much!
And as for the Aliens looking cruddy, (without spoiling it) the glimpses of them you get make oyu expect something amazing, but when you eventually see one, you'd have to be pretty picky to leave saying "Didnt the aliens look crap"
