Bouquet of Barbed Wire
ITV1 London - 1/3, Monday 06 September
9:00pm - 10:00pm Anyone who remembers the controversial, potboiling 1976 adaptation of Andrea Newman's novel will at the very least want to take a peek at Guy Andrews's updated story of the father who loved not wisely, but too well. Architect Peter Manson (a restless Trevor Eve) has everything: a flourishing business, a gorgeous country house, a lovely wife (Hermione Norris, doing her best in a thankless role) and a daughter, Prue, whom he hopelessly, inappropriately, adores. Prue (Imogen Poots) is a drip and a doormat, who shocks her comfortable, bourgeois family by bringing home her English teacher, a chippy, sneering working-class twerp called Gavin (Tom Riley), who takes great delight in goading Peter across the dinner table. Gavin soon becomes the viper in this particular nest, striking at the very heart of the Manson family. It's a simmering stew of melodrama and boiling emotions, and Peter's barely concealed perving over his beautiful young daughter still has the power to unsettle, even though it's all unspoken and is conveyed in looks and gestures. You might hate yourself for it, but you will be gripped.
