Can England Win the Next World Cup?
BBC2, Sunday 03 October 9:30pm - 10:10pm Working titles for this documentary included Out of Our League and Why Is the England Team So Bad?, which gives you a good idea of its drift. It's a belated postmortem on the lacklustre performance of the England football team at the summer's World Cup finals. (England fans who made the round trip to South Africa may substitute a more robust epithet than 'lacklustre' in that last sentence.) Gary Lineker leads the inquisition, which takes as its starting point the fact that the English Premier League is the strongest, most watched, most successful league in world football, yet the FA has presided over a series of disappointments in major tournaments that stretches back 44 years. It's a puzzle regularly chewed over on 5 Live phone-ins and newspaper columns, but Lineker has the advantage of talking to big football names, from Sir Trevor Brooking to Jose Mourinho.
