True Stories: The Battle for Barking
More4, Tuesday 30 November - 10:00pm - 12:00am
One of the subplots in the May general election was the rise and fall of Nick Griffin and the British National Party in east London. This superb documentary shows what happened and gives a clear idea how the extreme right got a toehold in Barking in the first place. At the outset, the news that Griffin is standing against incumbent Labour MP, former minister Margaret Hodge, provokes unguarded expletives from her. Hang on to your hats, for there's much worse to come on the streets where spittle and fists fly. Much of the film follows the campaigning of Griffin and other BNP activists. The result is full of telling sequences and delivers everything you could ask for - it's thought-provoking, entertaining and revealing.
