Scenes from a Teenage Killing - BBC4
Tuesday 25 January 9:00pm - 11:00pm
The stabbing of Shevon Wilson, 17, outside a Bristol pub forms the backbone of film-maker Morgan Matthews's powerful commemoration of all the teenagers who died violent deaths during 2009. Matthews delves behind the "gang-related" headlines to explore the events surrounding Shevon's death. The story of that fateful night runs like a thread through a bleak roll call of dead teens, with a chorus of grief-stricken parents accompanied by fatalistic youngsters sounding centuries old as they talk about the fragility of life. It's a long haul, but Matthews shifts his focus across different stories to include police investigations, good Samaritans and even members of the public exasperated by a crime scene forcing the closure of a road. The cumulative effect may be gruelling, but as an even-handed examination of the realities of teen violence it's a must-see.
