Sir Bobby Charlton: Football Icon
BBC2, Thursday 28 April 9:00pm - 10:00pm At the start of this terrific portrait, there's a moving sequence where current players offer their thoughts on Charlton and his place in the history of the game, but they're all trumped by Alex Ferguson, who says simply: "Unquestionably the greatest player of all time." When you watch the footage here of Charlton in his prime, his ease of movement and the power of his shooting gives you a shiver. The life story, too, is extraordinary, marked by the tragedy of the Munich air crash, where the young Charlton lost friends and came of age. But what emerges most clearly is his sweet, self-effacing modesty - not something you always associate with footballers. If you've got a football-mad child in the house, record this or let them stay up. It's an education.
